The Fragrance

Jatamansi oil from Nepal possesses a deeply earthy, rooty, and animalic-woody character with a dark, balsamic density. Its scent is somewhat reminiscent of patchouli and valerian. The opening is herbaceous, slightly smoky, and damp-earthy with musky undertones. As the scent unfolds, warm, almost leathery, and resinous facets develop, imparting a mystical depth.

Use in Perfume Compositions

Jatamansi oil is primarily used in heart and base notes and acts as a grounding modulator in oriental, woody, and spiritually evocative fragrance compositions. It enhances the depth, texture, and longevity of a perfume and creates smooth transitions to dark base accords. A well-known example is Shalimar by Guerlain. Jatamansi oil is used in Florascent fragrances such as Bahou, Attar Noir, Chakrascent No. 1, and many other perfume compositions.

Aromatology

Jatamansi oil is known for its calming and centering effects. It is used to address sleep disturbances, stress, and emotional tension. For an evening blend, jatamansi can be combined with lavender and sandalwood.
